We love our parks here in the Twin Cities, and with more than 67 of them around the state, the opportunities to see natural beauty and participate in outdoor recreation are endless. From kayaking, canoeing and biking to sledding and ice skating, we utilize our parks and lakes to get the most out of every season.

For locals and visitors who don’t have recreation equipment on hand, Wheel Fun Rentals offers select bike and water vehicles at six parks around the Twin Cities. And with included safety gear, including helmets, bike locks, baskets, paddles and life jackets, you’ll have everything you need to keep the fun going. Stop by the Wheel Fun Rentals stands at these parks and pay an hourly fee (price varies per item) for your preferred mode of exploration.

Lake Calhoun

This popular lake in Uptown Minneapolis offers the largest selection of Wheel Fun Rentals recreation equipment in the area. Peddle around the lake with cruiser, mountain, tandem and kids bikes, or take to the water with pedal boats, double pedal boats, kayaks, double kayaks, stand up paddleboards and canoes. Make a pit stop at The Tin Fish on the shore of Lake Calhoun to grab some fresh, fish tacos or crab cakes before heading back out into the summer sun.

Lake Como

A free zoo and conservatory isn’t all this St. Paul park has to offer. An expansive park and lake offer the perfect place for family-friendly recreation. Race between the numerous gardens scattered throughout the park on a Wheel Fun Rentals surrey or double surrey, or head down to the water with a pedal boat, double pedal boat, kayak, double kayak, canoe or stand up paddleboard. Lake Como even offers Duffy boat excursions, where up to six people can sit back and relax on a guided lake cruise.

Lake Harriet

At Lake Calhoun’s sister lake, Lake Harriet, visitors can swim, bike, sail, relax in hammocks and much more. Wheel Fun Rentals offers pedal boats, double pedal boats, kayaks, double kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, cruiser bikes, mountain bikes and tandem bikes for lasting family entertainment. Walk through the Lyndale Rose Garden or Japanese Peace Garden, or listen to live music during the summer months at the Lake Harriet bandshell. A large playground and snacks from Bread & Pickle keep kids playing all day long.

Southeast from the Chain of Lakes lies the serene Lake Nokomis. Although not as well known, its wide array of amenities and sandy beaches make Lake Nokomis one of the hidden gems of the Twin Cities. Rent out a variety of unique rides, including surreys, double surreys, deuce coupes, choppers and quad sports, or paddle around the lake in pedal boats, double pedal boats, kayaks, double kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards. Getting hungry from all the exercise? Sandcastle Minneapolis serves up American eats and ice cream shore-side.

Minnehaha Falls

The crown jewel of Minneapolis parks resides at Minnehaha Falls. Sandstone bluffs give way to the iconic 53-foot waterfall. Take a hike to see where the creek meets the Mighty Mississippi, or ride around the sizable park and take in picturesque river views on one of the Wheel Fun Rentals bikes. This location offers surreys, double surreys, choppers and quad sports. Listen to live entertainment in the park while chowing down on seasonal dishes from Sea Salt Eatery.

Veteran’s Park

In the southern suburb of Richfield, Veteran’s Park offers fun for the whole family. Between the ice arena, outdoor pool and 18-hole mini-golf course, you’ll want to come back again and again. Pick up treats, including grilled cheese sandwiches and malts, at Malt-T-Melt and take Wheel Fun Rentals surrey or double surrey out for a spin around the park.

CHASING THE SUN

A beautiful sunset deserves an equally awesome spot to watch it from

In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, it is only fitting that the top sunset viewing points are also waterfront. Relax in a picture-perfect scene and let the day fade with the sunlight. Whether you want to be in the action of downtown Minneapolis or to kick back in a suburban retreat, these sunset spots are sure to gratify your eyes, and the surrounding eateries will fill your belly too.

Minneapolis

Although the Stone Arch Bridge is a common place to watch sunsets, venturing off the beaten bridge can lead to some spectacular views along St. Anthony Main. On the east side of the Stone Arch Bridge, Pillsbury Park has a trail that leads down to the river and a west-facing bridge, which creates a secluded sunset sanctuary.

If your stomach is rumbling, enjoy the view over garden-fresh food at Aster Café’s outdoor courtyard, named best all-around patio space in Minneapolis and best place to go on a first date by City Pages. The cobblestone streets and thick canopy of trees overhead give this neighborhood a quaint, old-fashioned vibe, harkening back to the heyday of steamboats and flour milling.

The Mechanical Tree, a Ferris wheel for drinking and dining, at Betty Danger’s Country Club in Northeast Minneapolis has a unique sunset view. Play a round of mini golf and then sip cocktails that mock various high-society activities—Falconry, Fox Hunting and Sport a Sweater are some options—before boarding the Ferris wheel for some revolving sunset reveling. Rides start about every 20 minutes, so you can spin off into the sunset for only $6.

The Lyndale Park Rose and Peace gardens near Lake Harriet provide fragrant sunset perches. Easily accessible by car, with a paid parking lot at the gardens, or via biking and walking paths, this is a cozy retreat from the bustle of South Minneapolis. Pack a picnic and spread out in the gardens to watch the sky reflect the colors of the surrounding blooms.

St. Paul

Join college students and neighborhood residents at The Monument, a white pillar in a park on the west end of Summit Avenue, and watch the sun silhouette the downtown Minneapolis skyscrapers. Sit in the park or venture onto the rocky bluffs for a lower vantage point that includes the sky’s reflection in the river and the illuminated Marshall Avenue Bridge.

Photo of girl leaning against railing watching sunset over downtown Minneapolis from The Monument. You can bike, walk or rollerblade to this sunset spot via the paved trail along Mississippi River Boulevard, however if you choose to drive, there is free parking at The Monument.

Before the sunset, indulge at one of the many restaurants along Grand Avenue. Popular spots include French Meadow Bakery and Café, Salut Bar Americain, Italian Pie Shoppe and Winery and Brasa Rotisserie. For dinner-dessert duos, try Grand Ole Creamery and Grand Pizza, old-fashioned ice cream and pizza, or Café Latte, bistro cuisine and cake. Or satisfy your sweet tooth at Bread and Chocolate, a Café Latte affiliate, or Woullet Bakery.

Fuel up pre-sunset with coffee from Coffee Bené or bubble tea at Sencha Tea Bar, or toast to Twin Cities sunsets at the Wild Onion or Tavern on Grand.

Suburbs

The philosophy if a little is good, a lot is better certainly applies to Minnesota lakes. Behold: Lake Minnetonka, the largest lake in the greater metro area, with about 22 square miles of water and more than 100 miles of shoreline. For spectacular views of the sunset and the lake, head to Wayzata—a longer drive, but worth the distance—for a coastal dinner at Cov and a mind-freezing dessert Ben and Jerry’s ice cream or Yogurt Lab. A lakeside stroll will take you back in time to a coastal town with brick sidewalks, a large clock hanging in town and railroad tracks along the water.

Insider Tip: Aster Café is also one of the most pet-friendly outdoor dining experiences in the Twin Cities; plan a date night with your fluffy friend.

Insider Tip: Free parking for Grand and Victoria customers in the lot behind the Bread and Chocolate building between Victoria and Milton streets.

Insider Tip: The docks near Cov are open to the public and house many classic cruisers. During James J. Hill Days, the antique boat show attracts many wooden boats and their owners, ready to answer all your nautical questions.

MEDICINE LAKE

Public water access, beaches, and a nearby park make Medicine Lake a destination for outdoor fun.

This lake is located right off the southern part of French Regional Park in Plymouth. There is a public water access point on the northern shore of the lake in the park, making it easy to put your boat in and explore the lake.

Rent a boat for the day at Harty’s Boatworks. They have been renting vessels on Medicine Lake since the 1960s at their two locations, one on the north shore and one on the south.

As the second largest lake in the area, it may come as a surprise that this lake is quiet and serene. In other words, it’s the perfect place to launch a kayak or canoe and enjoy some peaceful paddle time. Located west of the Cities, Lake Waconia is just a short, scenic drive from Minneapolis.
